SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11: JOE DIMAGGIO RETIRED BASEBALL
Profile America - Saturday, December 11. One of the greatest players in baseball - Joe DiMaggio - announced his retirement from the game on this day in 1951. It was in the middle of three brothers who have become major league Center fielders, the other being Vince and DOM. Joe DiMaggio began with the New York Yankees in 1936 and in his 13 seasons with them has been selected for the All-Star Game each season that he played. It is the most valuable player in the American League three times and is perhaps best known for his remarkable hit game 56 streak in the season, 1941, a record which still stands. He was voted in 1955 baseball Hall of Fame. Baseball continues to be very popular with fans of nearly $ 80 million attending the games each season. Profile of America is in its 14th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
